FIRST LEGO® League teams, coaches and parents:
Welcome to the “Learn About Transportation Security,” a website created as a resource for the 2009 “Smart Move” Challenge. This website is sponsored by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) National Transportation Security Center of Excellence (NTSCOE).
The global transportation network is essential for sustaining our economy and national security. The terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 emphasized to the world how vulnerable transportation systems can be to people intent on harming others. Transportation systems can be the targets of terrorist attacks and can be used as weapons in terrorist attacks, as we saw on 9/11. Transportation systems are also vulnerable to damage in the event of natural disasters, such as hurricanes, floods, tornadoes, and earthquakes.
NTSCOE brings together leading experts and researchers to conduct multidisciplinary research and education for transportation security solutions.
NTSCOE supports the DHS goals of:
-
•Protecting our Nation from Dangerous People
-
•Protecting our Nation from Dangerous Goods
-
•Protecting Critical Infrastructure
-
•Building a Nimble, Effective Emergency Response System and a Culture of Preparedness
